My Women

My Mom and Dad

This morning I got to sleep in.  Til 9.  Then, my boys (all three of them) produced a scrumptious breakfast in bed for me and I spent the remainder of the morning in a quiet house.  While they ran themselves ragged at the playground down the street, I dedicated three hours to finishing the final book of The Hunger Games Trilogy.

IT. WAS. AWESOME.  As is best evidenced by the fact that even though I have all this crazy shit going on, I managed to tear through the entire trilogy in a week.

My quiet, literary morning gave me pause to reflect.  You know.  When I wasn’t knee deep in Hunger Games blood and guts.  My reflection:

Katniss Everdeen [The female protagonist in The Hunger Games Trilogy] is fucking fierce.  She’s like a super-feminist.  Saving like the entire human race from death by it’s own hands.  Huh.  Super-feminist.  I know some of those.  Wait.  Today is Mother’s Day.  I need to call my mom.  My mom is amazing.  One might even refer to her as a super-feminist.  Seriously. She stayed at home with her three kids until they were all in double digits.  Then she created like an entire career for herself.  She became a super successful realtor after over a decade of stay-at-home-momdom.  She could so kick Annette Benning’s realtor ass in “American Beauty.”  I swear.

My Gabu and Pop

And my grandmothers.  Now those ladies are crazy super-feminists.  In their way.  I mean, Gabu (my mom’s mom), well, she was a teacher until she had three kids and became a stay-at-home-mom. Then, after ten years of doing that, she decided to have two more.  Kids.  That’s five total.  FIVE!  What would possess her to do that besides super-human strength?  And…she can cook circles around anyone, is an expert seamstress and interior designer, and is very possibly, the classiest women who’s ever lived.  Ummm, hmm.  Thanks for not passing on any of that shit to me, Gab.  At the very least, the ability to cook would be an asset here!

My Grammy & Pop

And Grammy (my dad’s mom)…she skipped out on college for herself, but worked her ass off in a liquor store so her brother and sisters could go.  She had two kids, her first during World War II while Pop was off fighting Nazi’s somewhere.  How the hell did she have a baby without knowing if her husband would ever come back?  Jesus.  Luckily he did, but she continued to be a working mom in a working class town until her retirement.  She’s read everything.  She’s an insanely good knitter.  She’s an insanely strong woman.  I’m rather old to still have both my grandmothers.  None of my friends still do.  Gabu is 86.  Grammy is…how old is Grammy, anyway?  88?  89?

Some of my friends don’t even have their own moms around anymore.  I am so blessed.  So, so blessed.

And these women?  These three women are my women.

I am their legacy.

Happy Mother’s Day to all you fierce super-feminists out there!  Who are the moms you are celebrating?

I love these photos. Also? I’m psyched you got time to yourself. I see no mention of the coveted quiet hour on the internet but I’ll assume you made that happen. :-)

So awesome to hang with you Saturday and meet your lovely family!
